EMPIRE: HERE AND NOW
At the end of January the press reported the sensational news about the decision of France and Germany to be united in a single state. Such declaration was made by the the German Günter Verheugen and the French Pascal Lamie, political commissioners of the two countries at the European Union. It is a truly sensational news, as we become the eyewitnesses of a new stage of the European integration: the full political merger of two major states of continental Europe.
From the geopolitical point of view it is extremely important that this political merger was declared by Germany and France. Just between these two countries passes the main geopolitical divide of the European history.
Let us remark that, from the geopolitical point of view, Germany traditionally represents the "continental", "Eastern" principle, some kind of "Asia" within the framework of Europe. Its opposite is the "insular" England, the sea pole, the "West". France represents an extensive “coastal zone”, balancing between continental (pro-German) and maritime (pro-English) attitudes. If France moves closer to Germany (the former Austro-Hungarian empire), Europe goes to one historical direction - eastward, nach Osten; if to England – on the contrary - Europe goes westward, nach Westen. The maritime, Western principle in Europe wins at the expense of Germany, the overland principle at the expense of England.
In the modern political map of the West England is nothing else than the maritime base of the US, its aircraft carrier island, a part of the Atlantic system. Germany, deprived of its political and military-strategic significance after the Second World War, compensates its loss in the sphere of economy and finance. The German economy embodies in itself the continental "Eastern" principle in modern European geopolitics.
The strategic alliance, the rapproachement and the final union of France and Germany is the golden dream of the European "eurasists", the supporters of a great Europe independent from the Anglo-Saxons, of the “fortress Europe”. It is also the ancient project of the “Roman empire of the German nations”, the expectation of the “Renovatio regnum francororum” – the "restoration of the Frank kingdom" – the project of the German emperors Ottons, and the secret of plan of the Roman Church about the revival of the Catholic oecumene, and the hope of the European “new right”, concerned with the destiny of the culture and civilization of the Indoeuropean peoples. The Franco-German Europe is a geopolitical project with a distinct civilization outlook: its economic, social, humanitarian-democratic reasons cover the main element: such union leads to the creation of a European Superstate able to assert its own political and strategic interests in an extensive zone of influence, including both the actual European land and the territories of Maghrib and Africa (as according to the axioms of European geopolitics the Mediterranean sea is only an “internal lake” in the united room of Eurafrica).
The Franco-German Europe is Europe that for the first time after the Second World War pretends to play an independent game, in which the centre of its sovereign strategy – both in relation to the US (and England) and in relation to Russia – becomes the European pole.
France and Germany historically were, in a sense, the antithesis: their union is the fact of the geopolitical synthesis, the overcoming of contrasts. How must Russia consider this event?
Eurasian geopolitics dictates the unequivocal answer: we must continue the overland undertaking, bringing the "Paris - Berlin" axis up to its complete formula – “Paris – Berlin – Moscow”. Let us remark: the association of Europe this times stands on an overland basis and its indirect focus is absolutely not against the present weakened and astonished Russia, but rather against the planetary hegemon, the US, and its European agent, Great Britain. By the way, a similar sense had also the originary “de Gaulle-Adenauer” project of Franco-German union directed against the NATO, the USA and England. A powerful and independent Europe is a fundamental aspect of Russian security. We have no the right to miss this historical chance and we must join in this process on any terms. The Franco-German Europe is a pledge of our security from the West, the pole - so necessary for us - of the system of collective supra-state Eurasian defense, in which the second logic pole is us.
If the European integration will achieve its purpose, if Russia, with its enormous material, strategic and cultural potential, will join this process, tomorrow's world will be balanced, multipolar, leaving a wide enough field for choice. If the unipolar model – American-like globalization – will win, we shall probably have to forget about real geopolitical choice, sovereignty and multipolarity.
In ther meanwhile Russia must not lose time, passively contemplating which side will stand to gain. The geopolitical union with the new Franco-German Europe promises many frictions and difficulties, but it is saving. In the West of continent the French and the Germans have proclaimed the beginning of the realization of the Eurasian imperial project. We are obliged to attentively decipher this message. Now with clean conscience also the Russian patriots can say – “Into Europe!”.
